Paper crane was informed by the constraint of being primarily constructed from 300gsm card and spanning 600mm from clamp to light source. This resulted in the triangular profile beams that created the upright and horizontal sections of the lamp. The flat faces of the triangle were joined by an eyelet, allowing for a pivot point, and facilitating the ducting of cabling through the structure. The low weight of the structure meant that friction provided by the eyelet was sufficient to control the desired angle.

A further eyelet-pivot was introduced to create the swivelling head, and the clamp mechanism was created through a cutout in the upright and an additional nested triangular beam which could be slid up or down to clamp the light to a surface.
